Paris-based Digital Artist Cristian Girotto creates imaginative portraits of adults with childish features. We all agree that, somewhere inside each of us, there’s a young core, instinctive, creative but also innocent and naive. What would happen if this intimate essence would be completely revealed? Cristian Girotto’s project “The Outer Child” takes into analysis this possibility.

Extravagant train stations and mirror illusions are among the shortlisted images at the 2022 Architectural Photography Awards shortlist. Now in its 10th year, the APA celebrates photographers that encapsulate beautiful buildings, seek out new innovative designs and offer a different perspective on the world.
The competition is split into six categories; interior, exterior, sense of place, buildings in use and mobile. For a photographer working on a series of photos, there is also the portfolio category which is awarded to a body of work consisting of 3 or more images. Every year there is a particular theme for both the mobile and portfolio category and for 2022 they are bridges and transport hubs respectively.

This year, photographers from 64 countries entered, which is a big increase on last year’s 42. For each category, four photographers were selected to be shortlisted and stand-out shortlisted images include the Chapel of Sound in Chengde by Kangyu Hu (Interiors), High-Density City in Quarry Bay, Hong Kong by William Shum (mobile) and Glass Floor in Tokyo by Tom Ponessa (buildings in use).

In the portfolio category, Zhang Xiuning wowed the judges with a series of photos taken at Yuyuan Garden Station in Shanghai China showing off its wavey, LED canopy. Simon Kennedy’s photos of Istanbul Airport in Turkey which oozes Arabid design and Kangyu Hu’s photos of Shenzhen Bao’an International airport also made it into the top selection.
An unusual-looking primary school in Seyyed Bar, Iran taken by Deed Studio, a vernacular animal shed in Lissewege, Belgium by Servass Van Belle and Autumn in the Stone Forest in Kunming from Eric Siedner made it to the sense of place shortlist.

Paul Finch, program director of the World Architecture Festival (WAF) says, “’Now that ‘everyone’s a photographer, the importance of good architectural photography has increased because of the myriad images that potential clients (and award judges!) encounter every day. The APA program is an annual reminder of how architectural photography can enhance our understanding of design, rather than merely recording what is there. Long may it continue”
Overall winners will be announced at the end of WAF on Friday 2 December and from each category, there will be two winners; the WAF delegates winner and the jury’s choice. From November 30 – December 2, shortlisted photographs will be exhibited at the WAF in Lisbon.

LA-based production house Florence announces the launch of Florence Image, a new branch of its highly acclaimed creative studio. The addition of Image further establishes Florence as a cultural tastemaker and expands their ability to offer brands high calibre talent with a streamlined production approach across more mediums.
Image’s purview encompasses still imagery, photography, events, book publishing, and other creative endeavours that may not fit into a traditional box. Image builds upon Florence’s founding vision to manifest a progressive culture where creativity thrives and diverse perspectives are valued.

Sigma has launched its first zoom lens for Fujifilm X mount, introducing the Sigma 18-50mm F2.8 DC DN | Contemporary, price tag £429.99.
The new standard zoom comes in an ultra-light and portable body that weighs just 290g, making it the smallest and lightest constant f/2.8 aperture crop sensor standard zoom for mirrorless cameras.
The Sigma 18-50mm F2.8 DC DN | Contemporary provides a full-frame equivalent focal range of 27-75mm and promises excellent edge-to-edge sharpness. This is down to its optical design, which includes one Special Low Dispersion element and three aspherical elements to keep aberrations at bay. Overall, there are 13 elements in 10 groups.
Sigma says it has also developed a control algorithm specifically for the X mount that optimises AF speed and supports in-camera aberration correction.
Despite its small size, it promises a robust build. Its internal structure is comprised of aluminium with a Thermally Stable Composite outer barrel.

Celebrated art critic and curator Gayatri Sinha’s latest edited books Point of View: Defining Moment of Photograph in India and The Archival Gaze: A Timeline of Photography in India 1840 – 2020 take a deep dive into the technological changes and aesthetic movements in photography across the Indian subcontinent. Focusing on archival and visual elements, the collections provide a much-needed kaleidoscopic lens on photography in colonial and post-colonial India. GAYLORD — A Charlevoix man has been sentenced to six months in jail and has been placed on the Michigan Sex Offender Registry after pleading guilty to surveilling an unclothed person.
The Michigan State Police Gaylord Post was contacted in 2019 by a woman who was shopping at a store in Gaylord. She said a man took photos up her skirt while she was shopping for shoes.
The victim told police a man was standing uncomfortably close to her in a local store while she was shopping for shoes. The man bent over, and she observed he had his phone in his hand while his camera app was open. She immediately confronted the man and asked if he was taking photographs. He denied the allegation and then showed her photos on his phone.
The victim video recorded her confrontation with the man. She posted the video of the confrontation on Facebookand asked if anyone recognized him. Someone replied and said the man was Tim Bruce of Charlevoix.
Troopers interviewed Timothy Mark Bruce at his residence in Charlevoix. Bruce stated he was at the store in Gaylord shopping and said he remembered the confrontation with a woman, but denied taking any photographs. His phone was seized and sent to the Michigan State Police Computer Crimes Unit in Traverse City for analysis.
The evidence was returned, and a report sent to the Otsego County Prosecutor for review. A warrant was authorized, and Bruce was arrested for one count surveilling unclothed person, a two-year felony.
He was arraigned in 2019 in the 87-A Court in Otsego County. The case was bound over to the 46th Circuit Court in Otsego County. Last June, Bruce plead guilty to surveilling unclothed person and was sentenced recently to six months in the Otsego County Jail and his name will be added to the Michigan Sex Offender Registry.

Istanbul-based photographer Alper Yesiltas uses Artificial Intelligence to see what historical icons would look like today. Alper created the hyper-realistic portraits for a project titled Thisness. Behind this project lies the question “What would some iconic people look like if they lived in our time instead of living in theirs?”
Yesiltas used the original photos of these individuals to create modern-day portraits. With the help of AI, he reconstructs their outfits and the composition of the photo before editing the image to transform these historical legends into modernized icons.
Alper Yesiltas is a lawyer and photographer living in Istanbul, Turkey. He has been imagining scenes and capturing memories for about 19 years now.

The best part about my job (other than witnessing beautiful spaces and interiors firsthand) is meeting incredibly talented designers and stylists. Erin Vernon of Hamilton & Co. is not only a powerhouse of styling prowess, but also one of the kindest humans on the planet. Her design skills are so good that you don’t even notice the level of intentionality and detail. You know when you see something so perfectly as its whole that the smaller pieces blend in seamlessly so that you’re not looking at a collection of items but rather experiencing an entire feeling? That’s walking into one of Erin’s projects.
This stunning project on the Seattle Eastside was so much fun to photograph. Erin worked with the abundance of natural light to create an airy, light and crisp interior space that you just want to live in. Each room has its own flavor but everything works together to create a cohesive vision for a potential resident.
7. Do your preparation and research to line up the best shots
Our experts agreed that great travel photography normally needs hours of research and preparation ahead of a trip, whether you’re looking for the best locations or trying to secure an all-important interview.
“For magic to happen, most of the time we need to be in the right place at the right time with the right contact,” explained Yulia. “There’s a lot of research that goes into that, as well as logistical elements like setting up interviews,” she said. “That’s where tourism boards can be very helpful, because they’re the people who are most knowledgeable about a given area.”
8. Deliver a well-presented final product
For our panellists, much of the hard work comes at the end of a trip. From editing images to ensuring you’ve met your client’s brief, it’s important to think how you can create a final product that really stands out.
“You want to keep your final board [of images] very tight — think about what will catch the eye and stand out,” said Francesco. “[Aim for] 15 to 20 pictures, up to a maximum of 30, and put these all together in one single file — ideally a PDF. Make sure you start well and finish well, with dynamic presentation that will keep the interest of the editor.”
9. Stay humble and keep learning
A recurring theme across each travel photography session was the need to keep learning and developing your skills. “Be humble,” advised Lauryn. “There’s always someone doing better work than you, and you should always keep learning. The most important thing for me in the past decade is to keep learning on the job.”
Annapurna echoed Lauryn’s advice: “If you are passionate about photography, you naturally look at a lot of other people’s work,” she said. “It’s really nice to get ideas about different ways to use light and different ways to shoot stories.”
10. Be persistent and never give up
Finally, our experts emphasised the need to be persistent and patient as you build your travel photography career.
“This can be a really long game — you have to be patient,” said Yulia. “People often start pitching and stop when they don’t see immediate results. Those of us who are still in the industry are here because we didn’t stop pitching our stories and sharing our pictures. If we can do it, you can, too. If this is your passion, you just have to keep going.”
