The 37-year-old who won the iPhone Photography Awards says he’s not a professional and only started taking photos as a hobby 5 years ago

  • Iván Silva won the grand prize at the 2023 iPhone Photography Awards.

  • Silva, from Mexico City, said he used YouTube tutorials to teach himself photography.

  • He says he prefers using a phone to a traditional camera as it is easy to travel with.

Iván Silva may be an award-winning photographer, but he says he’s not a professional.

Silva, 37, was announced as the Grand Prize Winner of the 16th annual iPhone Photography Awards earlier this month.

Silva, from Mexico City, beat thousands of entries from around the world with an image of his young nephew celebrating Argentina’s 2022 World Cup victory, according to a post on the iPhone Photography Awards’ Instagram account.

Speaking to Insider, Silva said the photo of his nephew standing on a truck was taken a couple of days after the World Cup in December 2022 while his family was vacationing in Arandas, Jalisco, in Mexico. Some of the family were collecting wood for a bonfire when Silva’s nephew, wearing a Messi jersey, stood on top of the truck in celebration, he said.

Silva says he started photography 5 years ago as a hobby

Speaking to Insider, Silva said he began taking photos as a “hobby” five years ago and is self-taught; he used YouTube tutorials and movies, and studied professional photographers to help hone his craft.

These days, Silva said he only has time to photograph on the weekends or while on vacation as he has a demanding job. He works within the judicial system in Mexico and also recently welcomed a newborn son, he said.

And while he initially used a traditional camera, Silva says he now mostly prefers his phone camera as it is more “comfortable” and “easy” to travel with.

“This is the first time I have participated in an international photography contest,” Silva said. He added that he previously applied to contests in Mexico but with “no results.”

“When I found out I was a winner by email, my wife was taking a bath while I was taking care of baby. I was so excited that I didn’t read the whole message. I shouted and told my wife I won — she was very scared and thought something happened to the baby,” Silva said.

“She said she’ll never forget that day because of the scare she had because of my screams,” he added.

Silva said he initially thought he had won the childhood category, and it took around an hour for him to realize he had won the grand prize.

In addition to the grand prize and the three runners-up, the competition also shortlists winners from numerous categories including abstract, animals, architecture, and children, as shown on the contest’s website. Most entries are amateurs since the contest is open to all iPhone users, a spokesperson for the iPhone Photography Awards told Insider.

Silva’s photo was chosen because it captures the inspiration, hope, and dreams of childhood, the spokesperson said.

“His hero, Lionel Messi, came from very difficult circumstances but became the best and so many kids resonate with this,” they added. “The hope he embodies is the biggest gift one human can give another.”

Pan-American documentary photography exhibit to open at Centro de Artes

[ad_1]

San Antonio – A new Pan-American documentary photography exhibit is opening at the Centro de Artes Gallery in downtown San Antonio this week.

There are over 200 works from 20 award-winning photographers living in South, Central and North America to explore at the exhibit “From SA to SA: From South America to San Antonio.”

“The idea behind this exhibit is to bring a glimpse of different images from these regions, but also explore and understand what are some of the social, economic and political issues taking place,” said Guillermina Zabala, the exhibit’s curator.

Zabala says she has been working on this project for a few years, and the audience can immerse themselves in the stories of the photographs.

“On this side, you will find the work of Francisco Cortes, who is a photographer from San Antonio, Texas,” Zabala said. “He explored the images from the West Side. This is the neighborhood of Cassiano Homes connecting individuals, the culture, the landscape around the space.”

Different sections of the exhibit focus on community, immigration and the COVID-19 pandemic.

The exhibit is open from August 10 until December 30, 2023.

International photography gallery on display at Greenville’s Grand Bohemian Lodge | Greenville

[ad_1]

GREENVILLE — Fotografiska, a non-traditional series of photographic art museums, is partnering with Autograph Collection Hotels to display its new collection, Impressions, throughout the world — and is now on display at downtown Greenville’s Grand Bohemian Lodge.

The exhibit will run through Sept. 8.

Four artists-in-residence at Autograph Hotels in Berlin, Tokyo, Oklahoma City and the city of San Pedro in Belize gathered collections centered around the themes of inspiration, vibrancy, emotions and seeing the unseen, according to a news release announcing the series.

Jonas Bendiksen walked the streets of Berlin while he stayed at Hotel Luc, looking for spontaneity in his collection, small moments that can tell whole stories about the scene they are set in.

In Belize, Cristina de Middel pursued how the light, nature and color of San Pedro affected the characters of the city. Her work makes fictional scenario come to life with real characters and place, showing that the way we see things may not be as they truly are.

While living at The National in Oklahoma City,  Gregory Halpern took his time learning the location, placing himself in unexpected parts of the city: a boxing gym, barber shop and rodeo. His photography captures the young, big-city feel, and how nose rings and nightclubs clash and blend with the tradition of wide open spaces, highways and cowboys.

During her stay at Mesm Tokyo, Alessandra Sanguinetti took the plunge beyond the surface of Tokyo in search of people and secrets, revealing what the veneer of the city doesn’t show. Sanguinetti uses contrast to reveal the rich reality of the interior world.

“Impressions is a special project in showing the individuality of both inspiration and of the approaches that artists take to manifest their creative visions into being,” Fotografiska’s Global VP of Business Partnerships & Development Karolina Dmowska said.

The collection started its journey in New York in July and  then came to Greenville.

Next-Gen iPhone 16 Pro to offer stacked camera sensors, revolutionizing mobile photography: Report

[ad_1]

iPhone 16 pro, apple inc, apple leaks
Image Source : APPLE iPhone 16 Pro series to feature stacked camera sensors for superior Imaging

Apple’s upcoming iPhone 16 series is rumoured to feature a revolutionary stacked rear camera sensor design, a move that follows a similar upgrade in this year’s iPhone 15 models. According to Ming-Chi Kuo, a well-known Apple industry analyst, two iPhone 16 Pro models will be equipped with stacked CMOS Image Sensors (CIS), enhancing their photography capabilities significantly.

The stacked CIS design offers several advantages, including better light capture, wider dynamic range, and improved performance in low-light conditions. Apple is also said to be adopting this technology for the 48MP wide camera on the iPhone 15 and 15 Plus. To meet the increased demand from Apple, Sony, the provider of these high-end sensors, has boosted its production capacity by 100-120%.

In his Medium post, Kuo mentioned that the iPhone 16 Pro models, scheduled for release in the second half of 2024, will also adopt the stacked CIS arrangement. However, because of Sony’s limited capacity, Will Semi- the competitor is expected to be benefited from receiving more orders for high-end CIS from Chinese smartphone companies.

As for the immediate future, Apple is reportedly planning to unveil the iPhone 15 series on September 13. If the company follows its usual timeline, pre-orders for the new devices will begin on September 15, and the official launch will take place a week later on September 22. The iPhone 16 Pro Max, part of the iPhone 16 series, is rumoured to have a 48-megapixel wide-angle camera with an eight-part hybrid lens comprising two glass components and six plastic elements, along with enhancements to the telephoto and ultra-wide camera lenses.

Adopting the stacked camera sensor design is expected to revolutionize photography capabilities in Apple’s iPhones, providing users with a more advanced and sophisticated camera system. The increased production capacity by Sony demonstrates the high demand for Apple’s devices and the company’s commitment to delivering cutting-edge technology to its customers.

Overall, the potential improvements in camera performance and technology have generated anticipation and excitement among Apple enthusiasts as they look forward to experiencing the iPhone 16 series’ enhanced photography features in the near future.
