Crowd-funded projects mix excitement – because they can represent genuine innovation – and frustration – because things take a long time to make it from idea to reality. They don’t usually present the chance to get you shot, but this one, by Stockcam, definitely does!

OK, we can see some conceivable advantages to the design when it comes to holding the camera steady with the shoulder rest, and there are places for fill lights or microphones to easily be attached. There are mounts for a couple of lenses in the adjustable shoulder rest, There is even a tripod mount. 

It might even actually make a lot of sense. After all, guns are designed to be steady when aiming. Guns, though, tend to be associated with another purpose, and here is where we run into a problem. One heavily exaggerated by the Stockcam campaign images which don’t exactly steer away from the soldier look!

Size-wise, the ‘gun’ is 500mm long, a similar length to the legendary AK-47 popular with terrorists (at least in 80s movies), rather than the longer but more accurate M4 that US soldiers use today, which is about twice as long again.

That makes sense – here the ‘scope’ (or camera) is the key component, and the butt provides the stabilizing element resting on the photographer’s body. The thing is, through the eyes of a nervous law enforcer, will that be obvious? Or will it cause panic in public places? It looks very gun-like, and a slightly chunky-looking scope isn’t dissuade a nervous officer (and people get nervous when you wave a ‘gun’ around).

In the US alone, law enforcers shot and killed 1,097 people in 2022 – a trend that is steadily rising. That’s just the police. What about worried folk trying to protect their property? We live in a time of heightened concern and there are plenty of armed citizens in some countries, including the US.

Holding this in your hands is essentially handing someone an excuse to walk away from a 2nd-degree murder (manslaughter) inquiry with no punishment. In 2014 at 12-year-old boy, Tamir Rice, was shot by a police officer because he had a toy gun. There were other aspects, but in the inquiry it was noted that the toy didn’t have an ‘orange tip’ that would make it easy for the police officer to see that it was a toy.

Guess what, nor does the Stockcam. In fact, it is needlessly gun-like. Instead of a safety switch, it has a similar switch to choose focus modes. The shutter is, of course, connected to a trigger. And it is called “Fun and engaging” by its designers. That just feels a bit wrong.

So it’s a tool, being marketed a bit like a toy, that might get you shot. Still, I bet it feels somehow more powerful and important to hold it than a traditional rig!

Moreover, there’s a significant element of human experience that feeds into a photographer’s work—understanding a client’s needs, their personalities, their brand ethos, and more. These subtle, yet critical, nuances often make the difference between a good photograph and a great one. Until AI can demonstrate this level of sophistication, there will always be a niche for professional photographers.

So, what’s next for the professionals? Will they become obsolete in this brave new world of generative AI? Far from it. Rather than fearing the rise of AI, it would be more constructive to embrace it as a tool that can elevate their craft.

Generative AI can help alleviate the mundane tasks and allow photographers to focus more on creativity and innovation. It can serve as an aid, providing preliminary drafts that photographers can build upon, thus augmenting their capabilities rather than replacing them outright. Photographers can also harness AI to offer a greater range of services and open up new avenues for their businesses.

The future will likely see a blend of AI and human creativity, with each pushing the other to new heights. The intersection of photography and AI is not a death knell but rather an opportunity for photographers to explore new terrains, push their creative boundaries, and redefine their roles in this evolving landscape.

Change is inevitable. Like every other industry disrupted by technology, professional photography must adapt. However, one thing remains certain amidst this flux: as long as there is a need for human connection, empathy, and creative expression, there will be a need for the human touch in photography, AI or not. So, rather than killing the market for professional photography, generative AI might just breathe new life into it.

#10 “Glowing Fields”

The cycle of death and rebirth inspired this portrait of a woman burning her field to refresh the soil. The color palette recalls antique paintings and the spontaneous brush strokes of Impressionist painters.

Next time you visit the Downtown Boca Raton Public Library to pick up some summer reading materials, take a minute to look around the front lobby.

A new photography exhibit, “Through Our Eyes: Boca Raton Community High School Student Photography,” is on display through July 31 showcasing photographs taken by students in the school’s photography program.

Over 500 Boca High students are enrolled in as many as four photography and digital media courses for college credit through the College Board in the United States and Cambridge University in England.

“The students work diligently all year to prepare their AP Portfolio for College Board,” said Rob Sweeten, the school’s AP and AICE photography teacher. “We do have the largest AP 2D Art and Design program in the county.”

He teaches them the elements and principles of art; how to properly use cameras and photographic techniques; and how to create and process their images using Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop. In addition to winning photo contests, the students also serve the school’s yearbook, newspaper and athletic programs.

“Visitors will be impressed with the high standard of artistic merit, creativity and expression in the diverse collection of photos from the Boca High School photography students,” Program Services Librarian Lisa Testa said in a statement. “Congratulations to photography teacher Rob Sweeten for his ability to bring out the best in his students to produce exceptional photos for our community.”

The Downtown Library, 400 NW Second Ave., in Boca Raton is open from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Mondays through Fridays and from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Fridays through Sundays.

Library patrons also can sign up for the free Summer Reading program at bocalibrary.readsquared.com, on the READSquared app available through Google Play or the Apple Store, or at the Downtown or Spanish River (1501 NW Spanish River Blvd.) library locations.
