Stuart Reeves’ passion for empowering through photography

[ad_1]

Stuart Reeves makes a presentation at a JN Foundation workshop for participants in the ‘Greatness through the Lens’ photo advocacy competition.

STUART Reeves was only six years old when he developed a love for the camera, which was first introduced to him by his father, a fireman and hobbyist photographer.

His love for the artform blossomed, and more than six decades later the educator continues to teach photography and mentor budding photographers.

“Photography is an experience. It is going out and seeing an image and capturing it in the best way, using whatever techniques and processes to get that image. When you have that final image and you realise that is what you saw in your mind and that is what you got in front of you, it can be very rewarding,” he shared.

Reeves, who was born in the United Kingdom, came to Jamaica to complete a one-year tenure as a volunteer teacher in 1970. He was planted at Glengoffe High School in St Catherine where he taught industrial arts, but what was supposed to be only a gap year for the Englishman after completing his tertiary studies in the UK turned into half a century as he put down roots on the island.

The educator taught at various institutions over the years, including the Mico Teachers’ College (now The Mico University College); Fair Prospect High School in Portland, where he was principal from 1991 to 1995; and Jamaica College, where he served from 1995 -2003. He then served the Ministry of Education as an education officer before retiring in 2004.

Wherever he taught or served, Reeves always tried to engage his students in photography by establishing photography clubs at the institutions where he was placed.

Following his retirement he received the opportunity to do more impactful mentoring of young people, using photography, through the JN Foundation’s Resolution Project in 2010.

“When I was working with the Ministry of Education I had gone into Rose Town and I heard that there was a photography exhibition going on nearby — and that was the JN Foundation Resolution Project. I went across and saw the exhibition and I was really enthralled,” he said.

Reeves was invited to join the team with whom he was involved in mentoring new cohorts of photography students.

“The JN Resolution Project was an opportunity to engage children. The project had this big thing about advocating with the camera — the students really took to it. We had to teach them what advocacy was and how you advocated using the camera,” he explained.

He recalled that the students were given themes to work with and they were sent to their community to capture images associated with the themes. Workshops were also conducted with the children to teach them about the correct techniques for using the camera, and about advocacy.

“They came from diverse communities so when we gave them themes to work with, they interpreted them in their communities, which was important. So it was not a case where everyone came back with the same types of images; they were really coming back with unique, individual images,” he disclosed.

The JN Resolution Project ran for more than a decade. Originally called Youth Zoom, the Resolution Project began in 2004. Each school received digital cameras and participated in workshops in strategic locations across Jamaica. The fundamentals of photography and advocacy, as well as the basics of journalism, were taught and students used the skills they garnered to then tell intricate stories with their cameras, critically examine the issues facing them, and creatively articulate their observations in photographs.

Reeves noted that some exceptional students emerged from the programme, with some moving on to careers involving photography. Among them was Osheenei Zevandell Graham of Grange Hill High School in Westmoreland, who is now an established photographer.

Graham credited the JN Resolution Project for assisting him to develop his craft and giving him the exposure he needed as a student. He was part of the programme for four years.

“The JN Resolution Project gave me the exposure that I needed, and it forced me to come out of my shell and be more outgoing and more of a people person,” he said. He said photography is a good way of preserving memories and recording events and that it gave him joy doing so.

Reeves is again engaging budding photographers through the recently launched JN Foundation ‘Greatness through the Lens’ photo advocacy competition, which invites persons passionate about photography and community advocacy to enter.

The competition, which was launched in October, was conceptualised in celebration of Jamaica’s 60th year of Independence under the national theme, ‘Reigniting a Nation for Greatness’.

It seeks to encourage Jamaican photographers to bring awareness to the unseen ‘helpers/advocates’ whose voluntary service has been engendering positive change in vulnerable communities and promoting environmental preservation.

So far, 50 persons have been shortlisted for the competition which will culminate in August 2023 during Jamaica’s Independence Day celebrations.

“I’m anxious to see the work they [participants] will come up with,” said Reeves, who is one of the trainers in the competition.

About Dipanjan Chakrborty

I am Dipanjan Chakrborty. I am Kolkata based street and documentary photographer. I have been documenting Kolkata for the last few years. As a photographer, my perspective remains to explore street photography as a key to reach the common people and their lives. I love to tell stories through my lens.

Every frame tells a story but when we create a story within a frame, it makes the frame more beautiful. After being a street and documentary photographer my course of life has entirely changed. I have started photography from my childhood. But I have had a craze for photography since my childhood, whenever I could get a mobile or camera from anyone I would always try to capture my surrounding people and their daily life.

I love to see photos daily, in social media I used to watch various kinds of pictures from different countries and different photographers that helped me to increase my knowledge. When I make a plan to go out for a shoot, first I used to make research on that particular subject or project on which I am going to do my work, then I used to make a plan on that particular place and time when my shoot takes place, because time is more important in street photography. But sometimes when I go out with my equipment I capture various candid moments on the street. I am using a Sony A6000 mirrorless camera right now. I have used a DSLR earlier but mirrorless is giving me such a great output, especially in low light mirrorless is a revolution.

Kate Middleton Shares Rare Childhood Photo and Proves That Photography Skills Run in Her Family

[ad_1]

Now we know where Kate Middleton got her photography skills.

Early this morning, February 4, the Princess of Wales uploaded a rare snap to Instagram, that shows her from when she was only a baby. In the pic, an infant-sized Catherine reaches out to her dad and smiles, and as it turns out, this moment was captured by none other than the princess’s mom, Carol.

Along with this vintage photo, Princess Catherine included a quote at the beginning of her caption: “Faces are a baby’s best toy.”

The reason for this rare upload is Shaping Us, the new campaign that the Princess of Wales launched just last week, which she described in the rest of her caption. She wrote, “On Tuesday we launched #ShapingUs to raise awareness of the vital role our early years play in shaping the rest of our lives. This weekend, we’d love for you all to spend time with your friends, families, colleagues and communities talking about your early childhoods and how they’ve shaped your lives.”

Princess Catherine closed the caption by asking others to take part in digging up childhood snaps. “I hope you’ll also consider joining me in sharing a picture of yourselves before your fifth birthday to help with those conversations and to share some smiles and memories too,” she said. Then, she added, “[Photo] with Dad, by Mum,” and she signed the caption “C.”

Max Mumby/Indigo/Getty Images

Royal followers loved this rare childhood pic, and many noted the resemblance between Princess Catherine and her youngest child—Prince Louis, 4. One person wrote, “I thought it was Prince Louis.” Another wrote, “Louis is your TWIN [heart-eyed emoji].”

While Carol used to be the one taking pics, we now know that she passed that love of photography on to her eldest daughter. Princess Catherine is often capturing pics of her family members, like the portraits she took of Prince Louis on the beach for his 4th birthday in April 2022 (seen below).

Thank you for this incredible baby pic, Kate.

Nikkei: Sony to move camera production out of China

[ad_1]

Sony is moving the bulk of its camera production out of China and into Thailand, according a report in the financial publication, Nikkei.

The respected Japanese publication claims that Sony Group has moved some 92% of its camera production to Thailand, with the production left remaining in China to be solely for the Chinese market.

The new production facilities in Thailand will service Sony’s markets in Europe, Japan and the United States. Last year Sony sold more than 2 million cameras in its global markets.

Nikkei states that Sony took the decision in order to diversify its supply chain in response to China’s strict Covid lockdowns last year which saw many factories have to completely shut down. Nikkei says that the current trade war between China and the US was also a factor in the decision.

While camera production will be moving, Sony’s lens production will remain in China for now, Nikkei states.

Dickies launches partnership with Fort Worth’s Backlot Studio for product photography

[ad_1]

Dickies, the Fort Worth-based workwear retailer, will soon shoot all of its product photography in its hometown.

The company will work with Backlot Studio at 305 S. Main St.

“We are excited for our partnership with Backlot to take flight in the New Year,” said Dickies’ global creative director, Matt Lambert, in a release. “Fort Worth is home to a diverse community of makers committed to making their mark and it was important to us that we tap authentic, local talent to help bring our brand vision to life.”

Backlot is a 4,000-square-foot combined studio and workspace for creatives to work and collaborate.

Dickies product photography will take over the building’s second floor where Backlot will house samples of Dickies clothing collection. Backlot’s team will photograph products with upgraded LED studio lighting and camera gear.

“At Backlot, we’re striving to make Fort Worth a beacon for the creative class,” founder Red Sanders said in a release. “Bringing Dickies’ product photography home to Fort Worth is a huge step in our mission. This project is a testimony of both the promising future for the Backlot community and the creative community of Fort Worth as a whole.

Dickies has been in Fort Worth since its 1922 founding and is the world’s No. 1 work apparel manufacturer.

Throughout its 100-year history in Fort Worth, Dickies has operated out of 509 W. Vickery Blvd. and the historic schoolhouse at 319 Lipscomb St. In January, the Star-Telegram reported that Dickies plans to move its global headquarters into downtown Fort Worth in mid-2023. The offices will occupy 75,000 square feet of the top floor of a six-story building that’s next to The Tower.

Williamson-Dickie, a family-owned company, was acquired in 2017 by North Carolina-based apparel manufacturer VF Corp., which also owns the brands Vans, North Face and Timberland. VF paid $820 million in cash for the company.

“We have been part of this community since the infancy of the brand, and this move will allow us to collaborate more freely, build deeper relationships with makers in our own backyard, and access top talent as we continue to grow,” Dickies’ global brand president Lance Mueller said in January. “We’re proud to call Fort Worth home and can’t wait for this new chapter to unfold.”

Backlot Studio opened in 2019 as a meeting place for Fort Worth’s diverse creative community. The cowering space offers long-term memberships and short-term rentals.

vivo X90 Pro : Price, Specs, release date revealed

[ad_1]

The vivo X90 Pro has been announced and marks the fourth collaboration between vivo and premium optic manufacturer ZEISS. While the previous vivo X camera phones have excelled in imaging quality, this latest release looks to raise the bar with a huge 1-inch sensor.

Straight off the block, vivo is pitching this new phone as enabling Pro Photography in Pocket, a bold claim that seems to be backed up by the latest technology and features the company has packed inside.

Specification

  • Rear Camera One: 50MP IMX989 (1-inch) (OIS, f/1.75)

  • Rear Camera Two: 50MP Portrait (f/1.6, IMX758)

  • Rear Camera Three: 12MP Wide-Angle (f/2.0, IMX663)

  • Front Camera: 32MP Main

  • Stabiliser: Autonomous and independent OIS Technology

  • Lens: ZEISS Optics with T* Coating

  • Processor: vivo V2 chip

  • Photography modes: 4K Ultra-Sensing Night Video, 4K HDR Night Video, Handheld Auto. ZEISS Cine-flare Portrait, Night Sports Mode, ZEISS Miniature Effect, Zero-Shutter-Lag Motion Snapshot, Super Moon.

  • Dimensions: 164.07 x 74.53 x 9.34mm

  • Weight: 214.85g

vivo is pitching the new camera with four big selling points; professional imaging, Ultimate design (It does look good), flagship performance (It’s their best phone) and smooth Experiences, that’s to do with the experience of using the camera/phone and the updates to the OS.

So, backing up the bit that we’re interested, imaging, inside the vivo X90 is a 1-inch ZEISS main camera, an IMX758 Large sensor for the portrait camera, a high-transmittance Glass lens and the vivo V2 Chip.

The cooperation with ZEISS is a powerful partnership and was first announced in December 2020. This partnership includes the T* Coating certification compliance in the hardware and lens effect simulation in software.

The X90 Pro is the fourth generation phone in the line and pushes the boundaries of what the collaboration has produced before and builds on the experience gained over the past three years.

In this iteration, the large 1-inch IMX989 sensor is the big selling point which to date is the industry’s largest imaging sensor used in a smartphone. Not only is it the largest imaging smartphone sensor, but it offers an f/1.75 aperture and 3.2 μm large pixel, which helps to increase the amount of light intake per pixel and enables brighter low light and night shots. This is a big boost over the previous GNV sensor in the previous generation and increases the photosensitivity by 43%.

Alongside the low light 1-inch sensor is the Portrait camera features an IMX758 50MP portrait sensor with f/1.6 aperture and OIS technology. This enables stunning bokeh and better HD algorithms for better portrait shots.

The main camera is where the ZEISS magic happens and is certified compliance to ZEISS T* Coating to enable light transmission, reduce lens flares and ghosting and features high transmittance glass lens as well as seven enhanced lenses.

The f/1.75 large aperture on the camera can offer better light collection, which helps with picture brightness and much-improved picture quality.

Powering the new phone is the vivo V2 chip with major enhancements over the previous generation that are all specially tuned to enhance image quality.

A new AI noise reduction algorithm helps to boost the quality and resolution of images shot in low light. HDR has also been a major consideration, and the V2 chip sees an upgrade in the HDR potential with an algorithm that helps to optimise tone while retaining natural tone from the highlights through to the shadows. The display has also been enhanced and now supports framerates of up to 120fps for smoother playback.

As with all smartphones with high-end imaging potential, vivo has added professional imaging features such as the 4K Ultra-Sensing Night Videoo, 4K HDR Night Video, Handheld Astro, Super Moon and AI Night View, all designed to make the most of the large sensor and low light potential.

The new ZEISS Creative Portrait camera offers ZEISS Cine-flare Portrait, Nautical Blue Portrait, ZEISS Style Portrait in Front Camera, and ZEISS Cinematic Video Bokeh.

Big ZEISS features continue alongside vivo’s image development with various other diverse creation experiences. Zer-shutter-lag motion snapshot, Night Sports Mode, AI Perception Engine 2.0, ZEISS Miniature Effect and Photo Frame with ZEISS Logo are all interesting additions.

For the pros, these next two features will stand out; ZEISS Natural Color 2.0 and ZEISS Natural Color Display. These two features combine to enable you to capture the scene before you with as true-to-life tone and colour as possible. Not only that, but the quality of the display means that you can preview your images as you would expect to see them without overly enhanced tone and colour.
