DJI has announced the release of the DJI RS 3 Mini, a compact version of the popular Pro grade DJI RS 3. The new gimbal has been released to meet the demands of the growing number of mirrorless videographers who don’t need the power or want the size of the larger RS 3.
However, don’t think that due to the size reduction, the RS 3 Mini is a lesser gimbal. DJI has stated that this new version has been designed for the pro market as well as enthusiasts and offers a lightweight travel version of the popular 3-axis gimbal stabiliser that will pack discreetly into a bag alongside a mirrorless kit.

The new RS 3 Mini offers many of the same features as the full-size RS 3, so professionals can still take advantage of many tools and accessories that they have become familiar with. At just 795g, the RS 3 Mini is 40% lighter than the RS 3 and 50% lighter than the RS 3 Pro.
As with those two other models, the RS 3 Mini comprises features including full Bluetooth connectivity that enables direct connection to the Ronin App. One of the major features of this connection is the Bluetooth shutter control that enables you to connect to compatible cameras without the need for cables.
Ease of use and control has been one of the major features that have boosted the popularity of the Ronin range of single-handed gimbal stabilisers. Once again, here, with this more compact model, DJI has ensured that, above all, usability remains a key feature.
A small but functional 1.4-inch touchscreen enables users to navigate settings, adjustments and features quickly and all controls can be quickly accessed with a single hand. Ultimately the Ronin RS 3 Mini is an ideal solution for most mirrorless filmmakers, and the price makes it an incredibly interesting proposition.
Here’s a quick rundown of the main features, and make sure you check out our Ronin RS 3 Mini review.
Key features of the Ronin RS 3 Mini:
Designed for mirrorless filmmakers, the new Ronin RS 3 Mini is capable of carrying weights of up to 2kg (4.4 LBs) and will support many of today’s most popular camera and lens combos, including Sony A7S3 + 24-70mm F2.8 GM lens, Canon EOSR5 + RF24- 70mm F2.8 STM lens or Fuji X-H2S + XF 18-55 mm F2.8-4 lens.
Powering the Ronin RS 3 Mini are a set of ultra-powerful motors that boost the performance and mark how far the technology has advanced since the release of the original Ronin S. While the balance of the camera is still important, the power of the motors and intelligent electronics is enough that the RS 3 Mini can compensate for the weight shift of many zoom lenses as they reach their maximum zoom. This helps to ensure stability in situations that would have been challenging with previous and larger iterations of single-handed gimbal stabilisers and means that there’s no need to rebalance as zooms are used.
Horizontal and vertical shooting
While traditionally, video has always been shot horizontally; vertical orientation is also required with today’s social media. The Ronin RS 3 Mini features native vertical shooting to make things easy and versatile.
The dual-layered quick-release plate is an interesting physical feature of the DJI Ronin RS 3 Mini. This enables you to attach the quick release to the vertical arm of the gimbal without the need for additional accessories. Using this dual mount, the camera’s movement isn’t limited and will give you the full reach of stabilisation that can often be limited when using more traditional vertical shooting options.
3rd Generation Stabilisation
The new RS 3 Mini marks the 3rd generation of stabilisation. While small, this is the most advanced single-handed gimbal stabiliser yet and has been designed for use by enthusiasts and professionals.
New advanced stabilisation algorithms are the same as those found in the flagship RS 3 Pro to ensure unparalleled performance whether it’s being used in standard, running, low angle or flashlight mode. DJI has worked hard at the dynamics of motion and tracking, and when tracking and switching between high and low angles, the design, mechanics and firmware have all been developed to ensure as smooth as possible footage is captured.
Some big motion features, such as full 360º rotation, have been incorporated to enable features such as vortex spin and selfie mode and assist with advanced stills photography options.
One of the issues with many single-handed gimbal stabilisers is the number of wires needed to connect the camera to the gimbal for the shutter and many option controls. Here the Ronin RS 3 Mini features full Wireless BlueTooth control for the shutter on many cameras. Once the connection has been made, the link will remain linked and ready for action every time the ronin RS 3 Mini and Camera are switched.
The wireless connection goes a step further for Sony cameras with features that enable supported digital lenses to adjust the digital zoom via the front dial and again eliminate the need for wires.
Ease of use is at the heart of the DJI Ronin RS 3 Mini, with the small 1.4-inch full-colour touch screen enabling direct control over many of the gimbals functions and features. Next to the screen is the M Mode button that enables you to switch between each of the three custom modes; alongside, this is the front dial for focusing; all of these buttons are within easy one-handed reach.
Although small, there’s a NATO port on the side of the RS 3 Mini that enables the easy attachment of many accessories from DJI or third parties such as SmallRig. These accessories include SJI’s Briefcase Handle, Fill lights and microphones.
All-day power solution
Power comes in the form of an integrated battery in the handle that provides a good 10 Hours of use and should meet the demands of most professionals. Moreover, a full charge can be obtained in just 2.5 hours.
As ever, a major part of the Ronin RS 3 Mini is the fully-features Ronin App that’s available for both iOS and Android devices. This gives you access to many additional features, including timelapse, track recording, Panorama and more
