Go with the flow — Grant’s Getaways

[ad_1]

Grant McOmie joins landscape photographer Jesse Brackenbury for adventures along Oregon’s scenic coast and in the Tillamook State Forest.

TILLAMOOK, Ore. — You are apt to find me off the beaten path where the asphalt turns to gravel. Winter is no exception as I lace up my hiking boots, grab a camera and join a photography pro who makes “going with the flow” a focus on nature.

If you go with the flow, a river can be a photographer’s best friend! That’s especially true for folks who chase beauty across Oregon’s outdoors. Jesse Brackenbury, a professional landscape photographer, thrives on the challenge of the Oregon outdoors.

On a recent day-long outing, we joined Brackenbury in the Tillamook State Forest near the Jones Creek Campground along the Wilson River.

“Oh, I like this little scene right out here,” Brackenbury exclaimed as he approached a rock-strewn section of river. “I’ll try to get low and see if I can frame up something nice.”

He gingerly stepped across the slick rocks and eye-balled the scene.

“Oh yeah, that is kind of neat! It does get slippery sometimes so have to be careful not to fall,” he said.

Brackenbury admitted that some lessons in his photography career have been learned the hard way.

“Oh boy, I have made many mistakes and some real doozies, but at the same time it’s easy to learn from those mistakes and that’s what I love about photography,” he said. “I can try something different with each shot and it might be an absolutely fantastic outcome.”

We’ve enjoyed the Oregon outdoors with Jesse before, and perhaps you saw our first trip in 2020. We met him in the middle of the night and then climbed a steep trail to reach a high point near Mt Hood. He wanted to frame “just the right shot,” of the mountain and Comet Neowise.

“Most people would say no way to be up at 3 a.m.! But for a photographer, shooting a once in a lifetime experience like Neowise, we’re in for a real treat tonight,” he said at the time.

And indeed we were! He delivered, and it left us breathless.

“It’s such a different show out here in the night sky, with all the stars, the moon and a comet,” he said. “I love that.”

In 2021, we joined him again after the sun went down for an event too stunning to pass by: Oregon’s Glowing Beaches!

“Hopefully I can get some of the bio-luminescent plankton in the ocean to light up along the cliffs and have the Milky Way in the background,” he said. “That’s what I’m kind of shooting for right now. Look at this! Wow! So cool. These rocks are just totally lighting up! Wow! Oh man, so nice – just electric.”

“When I see a scene I immediately think: what can I create? Oregon is beautiful in so many ways from the coast to the desert, the rivers, the mountains. For photography, it opens a door and provides so much to capture. I really enjoy what photography has done for me,” he added.

More recently – in daylight this time – we gave the self-taught artist a challenge: go with the flow and create something special from the wringing wet Tillamook State Forest.

We chose a site that left us smarter for the effort as we hiked to University Falls in the Tillamook State Forest.

It is easy to fall in love with University Falls; the trail rises and falls on a short half mile trek before dropping steeply to a viewpoint at the base of the falls on the north side of Elliott Creek.

Elliot Creek is a small drainage, so the falls won’t flow nearly as powerfully in the summer as they do in the winter.

That’s especially true following a heavy rain when the fully charged creek creates a scenic 55-foot falls that is more akin to a silky wedding veil draped over a wall of rugged basalt.

It is a place where the wet is measured in feet, not inches.

“After a very heavy rain there’s a ton of water coming out that creates spray and mist that’s so hard for a photographer,” Brackenbury said. “You have all that mist onto your lens and you’re constantly wiping it, taking a shot, wiping it, taking the shot. It can be very difficult.”

Despite the challenge, Jesse found the magic in the moment and shared the shot with us!

“It’s a beautiful fall,” he noted. “An awesome area and it’s an easy hike to come here. It’s flowing real well right now. University Falls – that’s a good fall. I’ll have to come back.”

12 lenses of Christmas: August 2022 starred a pair of Sigma Astrophotography optics

[ad_1]

Fast wide-angle primes can come in useful for all sorts of things, from sweeping landscapes to architectural interiors and environmental portraits, as well as for street photography. Announced in August, Sigma’s new 20mm f/1.4 DG DN | Art and 24mm f/1.4 DG DN | Art lenses fit the bill perfectly, available in both Sony E and Leica L mount options. However, Sigma’s announcement positioned both lenses as being among the best on the market for astrophotography, thanks to their wide field of view, fast aperture, outstanding sharpness across the whole frame and effective control of sagittal coma flare.

August also saw the launch of the new Tamron 50-400mm F/4.5-6.3 Di III VC VXD zoom for Sony mirrorless cameras, originally announced and covered in our news the previous month.

Samyang (also badged Rokinon) launched the XEEN CF 135mm T2.2 cine lens in a range of popular mount options for filmmakers, including PL, Canon EF and Sony E.

Meanwhile, Pentax was still persevering with lenses for DSLRs and released an updated lens roadmap. Forthcoming attractions would include an updated 100mm f/2.8 D-FA WR Macro lens and two new lenses, one a telephoto and the other a wide-angle.

Other news saw the polar opposite of a lens launch, in that Viltrox followed the likes of Samyang in pulling Canon RF mount lenses from the market. The favored rumor for the disappearance of these lenses was that Canon had not ‘opened up permission’ for the production of RF lenses by independent companies.

Following July’s bumper crop of lens reviews, August saw relatively slim pickings, although we did run the Leica 24mm Summilux-M f/1.4 ASPH through out labs. The resulting review praised the ultra-sharp image quality, excellent build quality and zero distortion, although we were less admiring of the exorbitant selling price.

Four Dollars Per Snap? That’s How This Photographer Likes It!

[ad_1]

Most photographers shoot digital because of the speed it offers and the very low cost. Travis Cobb photographs with film exactly because it is slow and expensive.

If Cobb’s portfolio is anything to go by, it works! You can see it for yourself at traviscobb.photography, where he shares some of his amazing work with the world.

Full disclosure: This article was sponsored by Identity Digital.

Why film?

“I love film photography because it slows me down,” Travis Cobb says. “The cost to buy one roll of film, mail it off and process it works out to US$40.”

Cobb says he shoots in medium format, so one roll yields just 10 images. “Every time I press the shutter, I hear ‘four dollars’ in my head.”

“Nobody is paying for that, other than myself, so I have to be very conscious of what I’m dedicating each frame of film to.”

With a collection of 20 medium-format cameras in his closet, Cobb says the one that always finds its way into his camera bag is a Mamiya RZ67 Pro II, which he bought through eBay many years ago.

He describes finding that camera as a bit like finding your favorite shoe.

“The camera is an extension of myself now,” he says.

“I know exactly how to use it to get what I want. It’s a unique camera, and it takes pictures like nothing I’ve ever used before.”

“It’s definitely worth four dollars every time I press the button.”

Film photography has had a resurgence in recent years, and camera prices have skyrocketed since Cobb bought his Mamiya.

“Seeing what that camera sells for now, there are times I’m hard pressed not to list it for sale. But I’m going to shoot with it until it dies.”

“It’s like having a dog. You wouldn’t give up your best friend.”

Looking for a connection

Travis Cobb started taking black-and-white shots in high school and studied photography as part of a fine arts degree at university.

After this, Cobb says he was mainly photographing to document his newborn son.

But, it wasn’t long before photography found its way into his work as marketing director for a large sports company, which led to long hours and extended periods of travel.

“That didn’t work for me,” Cobb says. “As a parent, I felt I didn’t have nearly enough time with my son.”

“It was a struggle to find a happy medium between my love and admiration for this hobby and being a parent.”

Still, paid photography assignments kept on coming Cobb’s way.

“I’d go to work and put photos of my son as a desktop background on my computer.”

“People would see the photos and ask who took them, and then they’d ask me to take pictures of their kids.”

One thing led to another, and Cobb got into wedding photography. Digital wedding photography.

“I had to get digital cameras, as nobody wanted to pay for film,” he says.

“I’ve shot over 100 weddings and it got to a point where it turned into even more work, on the side of my full-time job.”

“It wasn’t fun anymore, so I had to start saying no a lot.”

“Now when I take on a client, there has to be a connection,” Cobb says.

“The latest wedding I photographed was for my cousin. It was just me, her and her husband on a two-week road trip through Iceland, which I got to document on film for them.”

“I brought 30 rolls, so I knew I could snap 300 pictures. I had to make every frame count.”

The portfolio

Cobb shares his photography portfolio on his website traviscobb.photography, where he also blogs and posts videos featuring behind-the-scenes stories from his photography shoots.

He describes the decision to join thousands of photographers moving to .photography domain names as cost effective and great for his personal brand.

“I used to have a rudimentary gallery display website where I’d put my photos on a DVD and send it to an acquaintance who would put them online for me,” he says.

Cobb eventually moved on to managing his own website through various web hosting services, but he was never happy with his web address.

“I’ve had a couple of domain names. I wanted travis dot com, but it was taken and someone wanted a lot of money for that.”

“When I found out I could get traviscobb.photography, I bought it the same day and paid a fraction. It definitely worked out better.”

“It’s easy for people to remember, and it leads to exactly who you are,” he explains. “When you say ‘my name dot photography’, it reinforces your personal brand.”

“If you want to showcase yourself as a photographer, this one is it.”

Whether you’re just getting started out or you’re ready to take your photography business to the next level, a .photography domain extension shows the world you’re serious about your photography.

Join the ranks of thousands of professional photographers with an SEO-optimized domain.

And, since your desired .photography domain is more likely to be available than the .com equivalent, you won’t have to worry about compromising your personal brand identity.

Your work deserves a .photography domain.

Join our growing collective and you may be featured!

You’ve done the work, and now it’s time for the world to see what you can do. Each month, we’ll be featuring a photographer’s website on PetaPixel, Shutterbug and CP Collectives. Aspen Colorado Art & Photography Galleries

Colorado is full of interesting little towns and settlements. Some have existed for ages while others are relatively new, but each Colorado town has a unique identity that attracts visitors and new residents year-round. Aspen is one of the most well-known of these areas, as is Aspen’s art scene. If you’re planning a visit, consider visiting one or more of the galleries covered in this article.

The Crown

Cloud shadows flow across the face of the scarred peaks of Colorado’s Maroon Bells Wilderness. Glimpses of jade boulders on the lakebottom are seen through the veil of gold radiated by the autumnal aspens on the shore. Fine Art Limited Edition of 50.

Aaron Reed Photography in Aspen, Colorado?

An Aspen Colorado Art Gallery has been on my short this now for a number of years as a place I would enjoy operating a gallery for my fine art photography work. Aside from my home in Washington State, Colorado is one of the few other states I would enjoy living in, with diversity in its seasons and endless natural wonder and wilderness. Only time will tell if this dream becomes a reality. Until then, you can see all of my Colorado Photography in my online Art Photography Galleries.

Crimson Heights

Towering Aspen and Silver Birch trees intertwine to create a wall of autumn splendor on Last Dollar Road between Telluride and Ridgway in Colorado. Fine Art Limited Edition of 50.

Aspen, Colorado

Aspen is a cozy mountain area up in the Rockies, and even people who have never been to Aspen have heard of the exceptional skiing landscape the mountains offer visitors and residents alike. The community embraces fine art and has an impressive selection of galleries for being a relatively small town with only around 6,000 residents.

Additionally, Aspen offers visitors the best in high-quality, luxury accommodations, an array of outdoor activities to take part in, and a variety of fantastic cuisine options. Depending on the time of year that vacationers arrive in Aspen, the opportunities to explore and have fun vary. There’s always something to do in Aspen, though, which is why so many of the world’s richest and most famous people either call this area home or stop by on occasion.

Jeff Bezos of Amazon, Bruce Halle of Discount Tire, Ann Walton Kroenke of Walmart, Stewart and Lynda Resnick of Pom and Fiji Water, and William Wrigley Jr. of Wrigley Gum are only a few of Aspen’s wealthiest residents.

Orange Crush

The marble white columns of a stand of quaking aspen looks like tears through a bolt of golden fabric on a fall day in Telluride, Colorado. The grove is so dense that even the leaves seem to have trouble finding space to flourish. Fine Art Limited Edition of 100.

The art scene is a big part of Aspen’s culture, as most Aspen residents have an eye for art and focus their attention on nurturing the creative community. Art and culture are tightly woven into the fabric of the town’s history as well as its modern identity. As such, several art galleries line the streets of the town’s center, and each gallery houses an array of diverse pieces that showcase the different forms art can take.

Galleries, art centers, studios, and museums house individual pieces and promote in-depth learning experiences throughout Aspen’s landscape.

Two versions later, the WEP 3.0 platform now caters to the unmet needs of women taking their first step towards entrepreneurship and those at an inflection point in their entrepreneurial journey, thinking about growth and scale. Anna Roy, Senior Advisor, NITI Aayog and Mission Director of the Women Entrepreneurship Programme (WEP) tells us more.

Fuelling entrepreneurship:

  • WEP 3.0 uses state-of-the-art technology and provides Smart Matchmaking with a pan-India outreach.
  • Partner organisations include the United Nations, Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Human X, Mastercard, SIDBI, Square Panda, Tech Mahindra, CISCO, Atal Innovation Mission, Flipkart, and Microsave Consulting.
  • Anna says women entrepreneurs must have basic knowledge of the processes, including legal and finance, apart from hiring professionals. She says founders need to be a ‘jack of all trades’.

Katrina Kaif and Vicky Kaushal’s Rajasthan trip is all about date night, strolls in nature. See pics

[ad_1]

Star couple Katrina Kaif and Vicky Kaushal are back in Mumbai after a quick holiday in Rajasthan where the two tied the knot last year. Reminiscing about their days in Rajasthan, on Friday, Vicky dropped a bunch of photos featuring Katrina. From a cosy date night to strolls in nature, the two made most of their days in Jawai Bandh, a village located in the Pali district of Rajasthan. (Also read: Katrina Kaif, Vicky Kaushal return to Mumbai after Rajasthan holiday)

Vicky posted a selfie with Katrina Kaif where the two were seen out in the sun, wearing shades and warm clothes. It was followed by a glimpse of them exploring nature. They also enjoyed a date night during the sunset in a picturesque location. The photo dump also included solo photos of Vicky, which might have been clicked by Katrina. In one of them, Vicky was shirtless while posing behind cactus.

Sharing the photos, Vicky wrote in the caption, “Khamma Ghani (Many greetings).” Responding to them, a fan wrote, “These photos hurt me … But you look sooo cuteee together.” “The last picture is SO HAWTTT,” added another one about Vicky’s shirtless photo. Someone also commented, “Beautiful pictures of a perfect couple.”

Katrina and Vicky returned to Mumbai on Thursday. They were seen heading to their car at Mumbai airport. A video of Katrina and Vicky outside the airport was earlier shared online, in which fans mobbed the couple for clicking photos with them.

Earlier Katrina had posted photos with Vicky from Rajasthan. She shared a solo picture of herself, and a couple of pictures of herself. In one photo, Vicky posed in the rugged terrains of Rajasthan. The photos also included a look at rare animals they spotted during their jungle safari in Jawai Bandh.

Katrina and Vicky left for their Rajasthan holiday after celebrating Christmas with their family. They hosted a Christmas dinner followed by a pyjama party for close friends and family in Mumbai. Katrina had treated fans with photos. In them, she and Vicky joined his parents Sham Kaushal and Veena and brother Sunny Kaushal as well as her sister Isabelle Kaif.

Vicky and Katrina recently celebrated their first wedding anniversary. While Katrina will be next seen in Salman Khan’s Tiger 3 and Vijay Sethupathi’s Merry Christmas, Vicky has Sam Bahadur, Laxman Utekar’s next and Anand Tiwari’s next in the pipeline.

Sheeraz Ahmad Awan, General Manager of Dubai Astronomy Group (DAG), believes that knowing about astronomy is a necessity in this day and age. “With the establishment of the UAE space agency, the launch of the hope mission, the Rashid moon rover and the UAE government looking at a future on another planet, understanding astronomy is crucial.”

Over the next year, the Dubai Astronomy Group has an extensive program of workshops, training programs and tours for amateurs and those wanting to dive into space a little deeper. DAG regularly holds Astro tourism workshops upon request from visitors. The tours take place in the desert, and astronomy professionals speak to the participants about the Arabic heritage in astronomy.

“We set up telescopes, and we offer them Arabic hospitality experience. This is part of what we do to promote the Arabic culture and heritage,” said Sheeraz. This year, instead of being limited to private requests, DAG plans to open its Astro tourism activities to the public.

DAG also organises Astro tourism trips to Jabal Al Shams in Oman, Los Angeles, USA and Iceland, where participants will witness the Auroras – the spectacular celestial phenomenon which is featured on most people’s bucket lists.

He said that it is a fact that one of our ancestors was an astronomer because, in the past, it wasn’t a hobby but a necessity. “Understanding astronomy and the stars bring in a full loop. We’re coming back to a point where the understanding of astronomy, space and stars is becoming crucial in developing nations and our civilisation,” he said.

Sheeraz believes that astronomy changes live because it changes minds. “Being able to understand our universe and how massive things are out there gives you an amazing perspective of yourself and what is your size in the bigger scheme of things. It is a humbling experience,” he said.

Those interested in taking their Astrophotography skills one step further than capturing the milky way can also sign up for one of DAG’s newly launched specialised courses.

“We are introducing the Astrophotography program as a public programme as well. We are giving people the opportunity to come and learn directly from an observatory astronomer who is collecting data on a regular basis,” said Sheeraz adding that these courses are more on the research and development side of astronomy, which takes it beyond the hobby status.

Over the years, he said more people expressed interest in basic aspects of astronomy, such as learning how to use the telescope, 3D printing and attending solar system courses. “We also have people express interest in being involved in the research side of things as well. This is why we are creating these programs, which are more extensive and longer than the regular 1-2 day workshops.”

The young audience is also one of their targets. “They are mind blowing. They’re so tuned in to the subject and they would ask you questions that you wouldn’t even imagine so they are also interested in the technical side of things,” he said.

The educational classes which will take place at the Al Thuraya Astronomy Centre include an introduction to astronomy class, a practical astronomy course, Planetary Astrophotography, Pure DSLR Astrophotography and crash courses in Telescope Training, Meteorites, 3D Printing and Paper Modeling. The Astro tourism programs include packages in Arabian astronomy, Greek mythological astronomy and astronomy in ancient civilisations and world major cultures.

Discovering the joy of photography in west Belfast

[ad_1]

BUDDING photographers in west Belfast have displayed their work for the first time in public for a new exhibition.

In recent weeks, a course for beginners was taught at Springhill Community House with award-winning Irish News photographer Mal McCann.

Those taking part were able to increase their knowledge of photography using mobile phones to capture landscapes such as Black Mountain, Titanic Quarter and the Bog Meadows.

The results are now on display at Conway Mill Theatre, with more than 20 framed photographs lining the walls of the once derelict mill which has been revitalised as a hub for arts, crafts, education, social enterprise and cultural expression.

Springhill Community House coordinator Ciaran Cahill said: “The exhibition was the first time our photographers, as well as their family and friends, saw their masterpieces on display, and they were literally lost for words.

“This project wasn’t just about learning new photography skills, it was about bringing people together, sharing experiences and exploring the beauty of nature that we have around us.”

Established in 1972 by Dr Desmond Wilson, the People’s School at Springhill Community House has been dedicated to empowering the local community through education. Many of those attending over the years have had a negative experience within school settings which discouraged them from returning to education. Through offering classes and training in a relaxed setting, the project puts participants at ease and acts as a stepping stone to other service providers.

As well as gaining formal qualifications, those taking part also build their self-esteem and enhance their quality of life.

The photography course will run again in the new year, with those interested asked to call Springhill Community House on 028 90326722.

Following another incredible year of spectacular photography contests, we’ve gathered a hand-picked selection of the best of the best. From curious polar bears to parasitic fungi, these are some of the most impressive images of 2022.

Unsurprisingly, the biggest international competitions continued to deliver spectacular shots, with the Pano Awards, the Sony World Photography Awards, and the Landscape Photographer of the Year awards particularly standing out.

Unlike the last couple of years, the pandemic took a back seat in many contests, with only a small volume of images engaging with this life-changing event. Perhaps as a result of travel restrictions lifting and photographers getting out into the world again, many of the most impressive shots this year came from wildlife competitions.

The Nature InFocus Awards, Wildlife Photographer of the Year awards, and World Nature Photography Awards all delivered stunning collections of shots. And the Comedy Wildlife Awards again helped lighten things up with a hilarious bunch of anthropomorphic amusements.
