Cork photographers capture stunning award-winning images of the ‘final frontier’

[ad_1]

One of the photographs, entitled ‘M-51 – A Galactic Dance’ captured by Sara Harvey from Bishopstown was selected as the overall winning entry in the aptly named ‘Out of this World’ category in the Dublin Institute of Advanced Studies (DIAS) ‘Reach for the Stars’ astrophotography competition.

Entrants to the category were tasked with capturing images depicting scenes or elements of astronomical interest, such as deep space stills or images of the solar system.

Sara’s photo captured the Whirlpool Galaxy, located a mere 31 million light years from the Earth.

As viewed from Earth, the galaxy has a ‘face-on appearance’, with Sara’s image capturing its distinct spiral structure and galactic core in all its spectacular and vibrantly colourful glory.

Commenting on Sara’s winning photo Professor Peter Gallagher, Head of Astrophysics at DIAS and a member of the judging panel for ‘Reach for the Stars’ described it as a “technically brilliant image”.

“The level of detail captured is really impressive. It is well framed to include many points of interest including the hot, young stars and yellow, older stars within the winding, graceful arms of the Galaxy,” said professor Gallagher.

“You can also see some tiny galaxies floating in the background and its companion galaxy NGC 5195 is clearly visible,” he added.

Another image, captured by Keith Levins from Blackrock entitled ‘The Almighty Arch’ was runner-up in the ‘Back To Earth’ category.

A tracked panoramic image, its was shot at Bray Head on Valentia Island, part of the Kerry International Sky Reserve, a gold tier sky reserve and the only one of its kind in the northern hemisphere.

The image shows the Bray Tower, which was used for coastal watches during World War II resting below the illuminated Milky Way.

Both award winning submissions, along with 11 other top-rated images, are being showcased as part of a free outdoor exhibition at DIAS’s Dublin premises.

Among them will be another image called ‘Star Boy’ taken by Colm O’Dwyer from Ballincollig of Barnard 150, a meandering dark dust nebula approximately 1,200 light years away located in the constellation Cepheus

All the winning images are all available to view now online at www.reachforthestars.ie.

Pan-American documentary photography exhibit to open at Centro de Artes

[ad_1]

San Antonio – A new Pan-American documentary photography exhibit is opening at the Centro de Artes Gallery in downtown San Antonio this week.

There are over 200 works from 20 award-winning photographers living in South, Central and North America to explore at the exhibit “From SA to SA: From South America to San Antonio.”

“The idea behind this exhibit is to bring a glimpse of different images from these regions, but also explore and understand what are some of the social, economic and political issues taking place,” said Guillermina Zabala, the exhibit’s curator.

Zabala says she has been working on this project for a few years, and the audience can immerse themselves in the stories of the photographs.

“On this side, you will find the work of Francisco Cortes, who is a photographer from San Antonio, Texas,” Zabala said. “He explored the images from the West Side. This is the neighborhood of Cassiano Homes connecting individuals, the culture, the landscape around the space.”

Different sections of the exhibit focus on community, immigration and the COVID-19 pandemic.

The exhibit is open from August 10 until December 30, 2023.

International photography gallery on display at Greenville’s Grand Bohemian Lodge | Greenville

[ad_1]

GREENVILLE — Fotografiska, a non-traditional series of photographic art museums, is partnering with Autograph Collection Hotels to display its new collection, Impressions, throughout the world — and is now on display at downtown Greenville’s Grand Bohemian Lodge.

The exhibit will run through Sept. 8.

Four artists-in-residence at Autograph Hotels in Berlin, Tokyo, Oklahoma City and the city of San Pedro in Belize gathered collections centered around the themes of inspiration, vibrancy, emotions and seeing the unseen, according to a news release announcing the series.

Jonas Bendiksen walked the streets of Berlin while he stayed at Hotel Luc, looking for spontaneity in his collection, small moments that can tell whole stories about the scene they are set in.

In Belize, Cristina de Middel pursued how the light, nature and color of San Pedro affected the characters of the city. Her work makes fictional scenario come to life with real characters and place, showing that the way we see things may not be as they truly are.

While living at The National in Oklahoma City,  Gregory Halpern took his time learning the location, placing himself in unexpected parts of the city: a boxing gym, barber shop and rodeo. His photography captures the young, big-city feel, and how nose rings and nightclubs clash and blend with the tradition of wide open spaces, highways and cowboys.

During her stay at Mesm Tokyo, Alessandra Sanguinetti took the plunge beyond the surface of Tokyo in search of people and secrets, revealing what the veneer of the city doesn’t show. Sanguinetti uses contrast to reveal the rich reality of the interior world.

“Impressions is a special project in showing the individuality of both inspiration and of the approaches that artists take to manifest their creative visions into being,” Fotografiska’s Global VP of Business Partnerships & Development Karolina Dmowska said.

The collection started its journey in New York in July and  then came to Greenville.

Body Found along Maryland Nature Trail amid Search for Missing Mother of Five

[ad_1]

A body has been found along a Maryland nature trail amid the search for a 37-year-old mother of five who went missing Saturday, authorities said.

The remains were found by a passerby on Sunday afternoon along the Ma and Pa Trail in the town of Bel Air in Maryland hours after investigators launched a massive search to locate Rachel Morin, according to the Harford County Sheriff’s Office.

Authorities are awaiting to confirm the identify of the body found, pending an autopsy. A positive identification has not been released by the medical examiner as of Monday morning, nor has a cause and manner of death been determined yet, the Harford County Sheriff’s Office told Oxygen.com.

Officials are currently treating the case as a homicide investigation.

Morin vanished on Saturday, a day before the body was found, when she entered the nature trail around 6 p.m. to exercise, police said. Her family and her boyfriend reported Morin missing after she didn’t return home. Search efforts for Morin had been described as “very active” at the time her remains were found, according to Fox News.

“The investigation went from a missing persons investigation to a homicide investigation,” Hartford County Sheriff Jeff Gahler said at a press conference on Sunday.

“We understand that this is going to cause a lot of concern,” Gahler added. “We ask everyone to use good judgment on the trail — and not just on the trail but in everyday life — but always be aware of your surroundings.”

On Sunday morning, Morin’s car was located by law enforcement at the Williams St. entrance to the nature trail in Bel Air. The vehicle is currently being processed by forensic experts. The trail is currently closed to accommodate investigative efforts but is expected to reopen in the coming days.

No arrests have been made in the case, the sheriff’s office told Oxygen.com, nor has a suspect been named.

Following the grisly discovery, Morin’s boyfriend, Richard Tobin, denounced his girlfriend’s murder on social media and denied any involvement in her death. Days earlier, he’d announced their relationship on social media.

“I love Rachel, I would never do anything to her, let the family and I grieve,” Tobin wrote Sunday in the comments section of his earlier August 1 post announcing the pair were in a relationship. “Yes I have a past but I also have 15 months clean and have changed as a person. Please.”

Tobin has a number of past arrests on charges including criminal second-degree assault, malicious destruction of property, resisting arrest, drug possession, intoxication, and violating restraining orders, court records obtained by Oxygen.com show.

Morin was described by authorities as standing five-feet and two inches, with blonde hair and blue eyes. She weighed approximately 107 pounds and was wearing a blue or black tank top, a black sports bra, black spandex shorts and grey sneakers at the time of her disappearance. She is the mother to five children, according to People.

Anyone with additional information pertaining to the case is urged to contact the Harford County Sheriff’s Office at 410-836-5430.

Good afternoon on Monday, Aug. 7.

We’re going to start today’s newsletter with a weather alert. The National Weather Service says Beaufort County is in for another round of storms Monday from about 6 p.m. until about midnight. Wind gusts reaching up to 58 mph and frequent lightning are in the forecast. Please drive carefully if you have to be out in the storm.

Here’s the rest of today’s top news:

1. A burned vehicle containing human remains was found over the weekend in the woods in the Burton community. The deceased person had not been identified as of noon Monday, but an autopsy was planned. Reporter Evan McKenna shares what we know so far.

2. In additional tragic news, a four-vehicle crash on U.S. 278 at Buckwalter Parkway on Sunday evening killed a motorcyclist and sent two drivers to the hospital with injuries. The name of the deceased motorcyclist was not released because the family had not been notified. The highway was closed for several hours.

3. Five restaurants in Beaufort County were cited with “B” grades in July health inspections. All in all, SC DHEC conducted 145 inspections of food-related businesses. How did your favorite fare? Check out this table that lists July’s grades.

4. Tripadvisor released its list of the top 10 attractions on Hilton Head for 2023, and it includes some of the places you might expect, such as Coligny Beach and Shelter Cove. However, the biggest surprises might be what didn’t make the top 10. At least one reader has asked: What about the lighthouse?

Canberra astro-photographer ‘99.99% sure’ UFO mystery is solved

[ad_1]

Ari Rex UFO

The object moved east to west over the course of 10 minutes. Photo: Ari Rex.

It was a normal night, out under the stars at Gundaroo.

Ari Rex was running one of his usual astrophotography workshops on Friday (14 July), training several clients in the art of capturing the night sky on camera.

At about 8 pm, something peculiar caught the group’s attention. Ari describes it as “an elliptical white object flying towards us”. The object moved west to east for about 10 minutes before disappearing from sight.

As a photographer of Canberra’s skies for more than 10 years, and with many prestigious awards and events under his belt, Ari has encountered plenty of “intriguing phenomena” during his regular astrophotography sessions. But this one was different.

“It didn’t look like anything I’ve ever seen,” he said.

Ari had been closely following recent hearings in the US, where a former military intelligence officer claimed Congress had been kept in the dark about “unidentified anomalous phenomena”, known as UAP or “unidentified flying object” (UFO).

In a social media post on 29 July, Ari described the white-ish smear as a UFO, in the hope others might have ideas.

Ari Rex UFO

A close-up of the phenomenon. Photo: Ari Rex.

Some commenters compared it to a reflection of sunlight high in the atmosphere or a cloud in the shape of a Tic Tac, liquorice, or even a tampon.

The experts were in disagreement over whether or not it might have been the plume from the rocket Chandrayaan-3, launched by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) that day and destined for the Moon.

“It would not be the plume from the Chandrayaan-3 mission, as that happened earlier (as people saw), and by this time, it was not over our location,” Dr Brad Tucker from the Australian National University (ANU) wrote.

“It is not astronomical – i.e. something in space. It looks more atmospheric, especially given it seems to be in that thin, light band of clouds.”

Another from Gilmore Space Technologies in Queensland said: “It is far too close timing-wise to not be Chandrayaan”.

“What are the odds of something else entirely, appearing exactly like a rocket blowdown, within half an hour of a sighting confirmed by hundreds of people?”

Since then, Ari has become “99.99 per cent sure” it was, in fact, the “IFO”, or Indian Flying Object.

“After conducting a thorough investigation into the UFO I shared earlier this week I have determined that the mysterious object is actually the fumes from the Chandrayaan-3 rocket launched by India to explore the Moon,” he says.

“Congratulations to ISRO for the successful launch, and let’s keep our fingers crossed for a smooth touchdown in approximately three weeks.”

Mystery solved. Probably.
